A very young Dungannon squad won the Campbell Cup, the premier competition, at the Omagh Sevens.
After scoring forty points against Omagh Mexicans and a younger team than ours Omagh Academy Dungannon took on the Carrick Seven coached by the mighty Gary Leslie. With Gary and Justin Fitzpatrick involved in the coaching of each side Dungannon Coach Jamie Turkington refused to be drawn on the subject of his friends tactical ability on sevens play saying, “Scrums and lineout are as vital a part of the restart mechanism in sevens as they are in the fifteen aside game.”
Dungannon emerges as winners 37-12 over Carrick.
This put Gannon through to the final where they met Dublin Wanderers who had beaten tournament favourites Stockport in the semi final. This was expected to be a close encounter but in the end Dungannon ran out 52-12 winners.
It was great to see the Campbell Cup, last won in 2008, on the mantelpiece at Stevenson Park again.
