| Dungannon win the Omagh Sevens |
| |
Saturday 26 April 2008
The Omagh Sevens
Dungannon won the Omagh Sevens in style at The Thomas Mellon Playing Fields. The only downside was that winning Captain Jamie Turkington sustained a broken ankle. Word is that the tough little scrum half has a clean break and there should not be any side effects. In true Turk fashion Jamie drove to the South Tyrone Hospital where an x-ray confirmed the break, we all wish him a speedy recovery.
In the Pool games Dungannon beat Stockport 40-5, The Mexicans 57-0 and The Titans from Limerick 50-0. In the semi-final they beat Ballynahinch 14-12 in a tight game before beating Ballymena 37-7 to lift the Campbell Cup. Team Manager Bill Brown was full of praise for the squad particularly the Dilworth boys Angus Taavo and Andrew Gardiner and Neville Magee who deputised after Jamie was injured in the opening match. The entire squad played well with Angus, Andrew, big Martin Boyd, Riddler, Derek Hall and Neville providing the muscle, Mel Ferry the elegance and Dazzler Simpson, Dale Black and Parkhill the pace.
The Waterson Cup for Pool runners up was won by Queen’s whilst the Campese Cup for third place teams was lifted by The Jokers.
Dungannon President David Millar was very pleased to see The Campbell Cup in the Trophy Cabinet at Stevenson Park again,” I am delighted that after not being able to enter a team last year we were able to participate in the local sevens competition organised by our neighbours Omagh Academicals and I am doubly pleased that we won the Campbell Cup with style.”
Dungannon Squad: Jamie Turkington (Captain), Angus Taavo, Andrew Gardner, Martin Boyd, Neville Magee, Derek Hall, Mark Riddell, Melvin Ferry, Dale Black, Darren Simpson and David Parkhill.
