Jimmy Davidson
It is with regret that the members and friends of Dungannon Rugby Club learned of the sad passing of former Dungannon, Ulster and Ireland star, Jimmy Davidson. Jimmy D, as he was affectionately known was a key player in the Stevenson Park set up in the 60s and 70s, displaying a refreshing enthusiasm for the game with his back row talent getting both Ulster and Irish recognition. The first of his six caps came in 1969 when he played in all of the Five Nations Championship matches. He was also capped in games against New Zealand in 1973 and 1976. Jimmy’s passion for the game continued in the coaching arena with many players learning the finer arts from him and he had spells coaching both Ulster and Ireland. As a player he was a great man to have on your side. As a coach he was a man ahead of his time both in his technical views and his aspirations for the game in Ireland. In more recent years many appreciated his match analyses on the ‘box’ during representative games as well as his constructive views on the way ahead for Irish rugby. His courageous battle with illness ended on Sunday and deepest sympathy is extended to his wife, Norma and family. May his valiant spirit rest. |
